Cary man shot, killed near community pool was not targeted because of ethnicity, investigators say

One man was shot and killed near a community pool in Cary on Thursday afternoon. Selvaraju Vellingiri, 55, of Cary, was found dead by police just after 4 p.m. Thursday.

CARY, N.C. — One man was shot and killed near a community pool in Cary on Thursday afternoon.

Selvaraju Vellingiri, 55, of Cary, was found dead just after after 4 p.m. at the 100 block of Connemara Drive.

Vellingiri was not targeted because of his ethnicity, according to an update in the police investigation.

Investigators also said that the crime was not related to domestic violence.

A 911 caller said they heard five gunshots in a row near the pool area, then saw a man run from a wooded area toward the tennis courts.

This is the town of Cary's first reported homicide in 2020.
