CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carowinds is in the running for three national awards, including best water park, best entertainment and best roller coaster.

The 400-acre park, located off Interstate 77 in Charlotte, is home to 14 roller coasters, the Carolina Harbor water park (admission included in ticket price) and dozens of other rides and attractions.

Three Carowinds attractions are nominated for USA Today's "10Best" awards, the park announced Wednesday. Those include:

  • Best water park: Carolina Harbor
  • Best entertainment at an amusement park: Seasons of Cirque
  • Best roller coaster: Fury 325

Carowinds' Seasons of Cirque, a live show of aerial stunts, choreography and visual effects, will compete against shows like Illuminations: Reflections of Earth at Epcot, Happily Ever After at Magic Kingdom, Ghost Town Alive at Knott's Berry Farm and Celtic Fyre at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va.

Fury 325, which features a 325-foot drop and reaches speeds of 95 mph, will compete against two Kings Dominion coasters and Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain, among others. Other voting categories that did not include Carowinds attractions include best amusement park, best amusement park restaurant, best hotel and best indoor water park.

Carowinds was the only North Carolina park represented in the contest.
