CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carowinds amusement park’s 2022 opening day was short-lived.

The park closed at 2 p.m. Saturday due to the weather, but it marked the first time the park opened without COVID-19 restrictions in two years. The 407-acre park had been initially scheduled to remain open until 6 p.m.

Tickets dated Saturday are valid for any day the park is open to the public through May, according to Carowinds' Twitter account.

This season, face coverings are not required for guests. Also, reservations and health screenings are no longer required for guests. The Carowinds offers hand sanitizer stations throughout the park.

Last season, reservations were required for guests and the park also had a daily limit.

The park’s changes after Mecklenburg County lifted many of its COVID-19 restrictions at the end of February.

On Friday night, the Carowinds held an event for season passholders.

The park is scheduled to reopen again from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
