Carolina Beach leaders investigated by SBI
The Carolina Beach mayor said he's cooperating with the State Bureau of Investigation as it looks into allegations of corruption against him and two town council members.
Posted — UpdatedMayor Joel Macon said he turned over documents the SBI requested. Macon said he's done nothing wrong.
Along with Macon, the SBI is investigating council members Dan Wilcox and Pat Efird, a spokeswoman for the agency said.
A letter sent to authorities claims that Macon and Wilcox received money after voting for the town to buy and rezone property at an inflated price.
The letter also states that Efird also voted with Macon and Wilcox and then purchased real estate at a significantly reduced price. Efird said she doesn't think she purchased property at a reduced price.
Wilcox blamed the issue on politics. Wilcox and Efird are candidates in this year's mayoral race, along with former Mayor Ray Rothrock.
