SELMA, N.C. — A woman was killed in an accident on Fire Tower Road, east of Selma, on Sunday afternoon.

State troopers said they believe Pamela Ann Neil, 47, of Smithfield, lost control of her vehicle when she hit a gravel driveway after coming around a curve. She was traveling south on Fire Tower Road.

The right wheels of her 2001 Dodge Neon went off the road, and Niel overcorrected, troopers said.

The Neon hit a ditch on the left side of the road, causing the car to roll over twice. The Neon came to rest upside down, crushing the driver side roof.

The accident occurred just north of the intersection with U.S. 70 Business.

The first emergency workers at the scene said Niel was dead when they arrived.

Troopers said speed was a factor in the accident, with Niel traveling 10 mph over the 45 mph speed limit. She was wearing her seat belt.
