— The candidate-filing period for municipal and school board elections this fall closed at noon Friday with a flurry of activity.

In Raleigh, Mark Enloe and Gregg Kunz will try to unseat four-term Mayor Charles Meeker. Seventeen people are running for the seven City Council seats, and 14 people are vying for four seats on the Wake County Board of Education.

In Durham, Mayor Bill Bell will run for re-election against Republican Steven Williams, while four people will campaign to succeed Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy, who isn't running for re-election.

Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne faces four opponents in the fall election.
