KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Igor, a K-9 from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office who went missing on July 4 when someone set off fireworks, has been located and is safe, officials said Monday.

According to officials, K-9 "Igor" was not on a leash when he was taken outside to use the bathroom on Thursday around 9:45 p.m. in Kannapolis. When fireworks discharged nearby, Igor was spooked and took off running. He did not respond to his handler's verbal commands.

According to officials, a tip called into the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office at 6:43 a.m. on Monday led deputies to Igor, who was found at 284 Executive Park Drive in Concord.

Igor will receive a check-up at a veterinarian but does not appear to have any signs of distress or injury, officials said.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the public for their vigilance and outpouring of support throughout this ordeal,” said Cabarrus County Sheriff Van Shaw. “We’re glad to have Igor back.”

Igor is a Belgian Malinois that is trained in explosive detection.

Officers searched the area on July 4 and residents in Kannapolis were notified of Igor's disappearance using mass notification software.
