Bystander to Zebulon fight shot in head
A bystander to a fight outside his house in Zebulon late Thursday was struck in the head with a bullet, Police Chief Timothy Hayworth said. Authorities have arrested a suspect.
Posted — UpdatedHayworth said witnesses stated that Alonza Jamal Hunter, 21, got into an altercation with a person, then pulled out a gun and started firing outside 712 Shepard School Road around 11:20 p.m.
One round struck Jonathan Trevon Smith, 19, who was sitting in a parked car, the police chief said. He was taken to a local medical center, where he was undergoing emergency care early Friday.
Smith was not the intended target, Hayworth said.
Hunter, of 6470 Winters Road in Middlesex, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, shooting into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has not yet appeared before a magistrate.
Hayworth said that the investigation was ongoing, and more charges might be filed.
