RALEIGH, N.C. — Buying and selling on social media has become a staple of the shopping experience.

“We get 10 to 20 posts every 15 to 20 minutes, so pretty much one every minute,” said Kelly Shearon, administrator for the Cary/Apex buy sell trade group on Facebook.

People regularly offer items for sale for as little as $5 to nearly $1500 and beyond.

But both buyers and sellers are urged to use caution. Every posting on social media can be a link right to your door.

In 2019, the photo-sharing app's user growth rate dropped to single digits for the first time to 6.7%, down from 10.1% in 2018, according to eMarketer. Meanwhile, Snapchat is having a resurgence.

“That is a risk you have to consider, and you have to wonder is it worth it. And if it is, then you take that risk,” said Shearon.

“I’m always buying and selling things,” said Brian Craig. “I’ve been on Facebook for 10 years now.”

Thieves can use social media profiles to target homes, where high value items have been advertised for sale.

“You have to take safety seriously now days,” said Craig.

Gerod Farmer is a private police officer. He's bought and sold plenty online but says consider risks carefully before posting certain items.

“I’ve been selling stuff online since 1998,” said Farmer.

“If it’s a high-priced item, it’s not even worth it,” said Farmer.

“Trust your gut,” said Shearon.

Shearon tells buyers and sellers alike, remember this one thing.

“These people are strangers. Period,” said Shearon.
