MORRISVILLE, N.C. — After a weekend of record breaking travel numbers across the country, Monday is going to be another busy one as holiday travelers head home.

So what can you can expect if you're heading to the airport this morning?

Today is expected to be one of the busiest travel days, with 36,000 people expected to come through Raleigh-Durham International Airport – even more than came through on Memorial Day.

As early as 6:30 a.m., bustling crowds were lining up. Fortunately, lines were moving pretty quickly.

After a challenging economic year for the travel industry, airline travel has picked up a lot in recent weeks. Crowds could be seen in RDU on Friday as people kicked off the holiday weekend.

RDU has been pushing a return to air travel while trying to recover from the pandemic. Airport officials say it’s leisure travel that’s driving the airport's recovery, with holiday vacations and travel accounting for 80% of all airport travel.

Most of the people who spoke with WRAL News on Monday morning were headed on vacation. One family arrived almost four hours early in anticipation of crowds.

However, some people were traveling for business. WRAL News met one woman who was headed to Yellowstone Park for three months of work.

She said getting through RDU was quick and easy, even with the crowds.

Airport officials recommend trying to reserve a parking spot ahead of time if you do plan on driving to RDU.
