Many people have no idea that North Carolina has its very own version of utopia - a miniature stone village tucked away in a rural part of Caswell County.

Hey there everyone. This is W R L's hidden historian Heather Leah. And today I am in Shangri La Stone Village. It's a absolutely beautiful hand made miniature stone village. But when I say miniature, it's still big enough to walk through. And I'm hoping that I will be able to keep signal out here because I am in rural North Carolina. Last time I came out here, I wasn't able to hold a live signal. So I'm gonna try because I'm out here again to do another story and I really would love to show it to you. So without further ado, I'll go ahead and turn around the camera and again, if it cuts off, I am sorry, but I hope that you'll be able to see at least some of it today. There is a story and a podcast on W R L dot com with more photos and information if I am cut off. Anyways, this is Shangrila Stone Village and I'm going to start at the beginning right here. So the person who built this village is named Henry Warren and he was a retired tobacco farmer. He built this many decades ago, this village has been here for decades and decades. Um He built it when he was in his seventies and he was dying of cancer. Shangrila. Uh in uh fiction is meant to be kind of like paradise on earth. It's, it's, it's a place of perfection and safety and beauty. It's uh I said it's, it's paradise on earth. Uh in fiction, that's what Shangrila means. And you can see Henry, this is Henry Warren's quote here, let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man. And so the story, aside from this being extremely beautiful and we're gonna explore it. He made, he made so many buildings during his decade of working on this. And he literally quarried the stone from the earth himself. So he's a retired tobacco farmer. He's by no means an expert in crafting miniature stone villages or architecture or engineering. And yet he made this and we're going to go through it as much as we can today. And I want to show it to you. He made everything a village would need. And again, he's making this as he's struggling and fighting with cancer. Um Again, quarrying the stone from the earth himself. Um I just am not sure I would have the energy for that, but he did because he wanted to create this paradise on earth that would outlive him that people could come and visit and you can come and visit it this is still a family home, a private family home where his kin lives and yet they let it be open to the public because they want people to come visit. Now, he has built a church. These buildings when I heard miniature and I came out here the first time I thought they would maybe come up to my knee. But the buildings are taller than, than most people. Uh, they, they're pretty tall buildings, they're small but they're, they're bigger than you would expect. And it's, they're just completely, not just built but, but decorated. He painted them. And if you look closely, you will see all kinds of little Easter eggs and hidden parts of his personality that he put here. Oh, good question, Deborah. I didn't say yet. Uh Prospect Hill, North Carolina. Prospect Hill. It's about an hour from Raleigh. You can see here. He included, the village has a, a mill and even a water hole where the that can turn the, the mill. Um, he's got a water tower which is pretty impressively tall. He made a jail and it's always fun when you come visit to see who's in the jail today because there's become kind of a tradition of people visiting and leaving toys behind. Um, and there are toys all over and we will look at them. It does look like there is someone in jail today. Well, it's a very confused looking snowman. I'm sorry, Mr Snowman. I'm not sure what you did to end up in jail. Um And again, there's all kinds of buildings. Uh, I believe this is the schoolhouse. Look at this. He's got this archway entering into the school and then someone left behind a vintage Snoopy flying. This was not here before. So this is a new addition. Definitely worth coming to visit. Yes, it's near 86. That's right, Deborah. It's right beside the fire department. Uh it can be hard to find your first time coming out here. Um, but you'll see, uh, the fire department on the side of the road. Uh, and that's usually how I can tell that I'm close by. Uh, there's also, you can't see it from here, but there's a stone pillar that looks a lot like these out there, uh, kind of beckoning people in. So we're gonna walk into the village a little more and he got all these little additions, like little chairs where people could sit, um, little, little doorknobs and overhangs staircases so that you really feel like you're, you're part of this village, you live here. Um And I mean, look at the, the decoration, the, the way he put in the bricks and different styles and patterns to really not just build these structures but give them a, give them a style. So here's another building here. And again, this has been here for decades, you can see he's got like a walkway where you can walk around the edge there. And then, I mean, if you lived here, you would get to live in these enormous buildings and even put the door knobs in the doors. He's got things that I'm not sure what they are like. Um, looks like there's a throne there and I do believe this was a throne. I'm not sure what happened to it. I'm pretty sad. There used to be a place you could sit here, but it looks like perhaps some weathering and damage has happened over the years. There are beautiful places where you can actually tell that, you know, people sized people, uh people who were not, um you know, where people could come visit, not the magical people who live here, but regular people would come and stay and sit and uh enjoy perhaps sitting at this. This used to be a table and some chairs, a little staircase and then we have a um, a fireplace where people could come and sit. So it looks like he did expect that people would spend time here. Uh, and not just wander through. It's like a whole entire courtyard here and then just some beautiful pieces of art that he's put together. And you can see, sadly, things have broken over the years. So there's quite a lot of character here as well. We have another house here and again, I don't know what all of these buildings are, but it's fun to look at them and he put in pieces of art to really give them character. I was told by his family that he would go to little antique fairs and look around and buy things to decorate out here. You can see, I mean, these, these are pretty sizable buildings, very beautiful and you can see there's little, little dogs and things like that and it's hard to tell sometimes. Is it something that he left or is it something that was left by someone who came to visit? Uh, look at the little doors. You can't help but want to know what's, what's inside and wish that you could maybe live here and spend time here. It's another really, really big building. I'm wondering if this might be the hospital. I was told that the hospital was the last building that he ever built. And I don't think he quite finished it. I think that his family finished that one for him. This is, this dog has been here forever. I've come out several times and this is definitely something that Henry left here. So you can see he's got all sorts of little, little decorations and the sizes don't have to match. Right. This will be an enormous dog to live in such a village and quite an enormous headless chicken, but they didn't have to match. It was a place of whimsy and magic and fun and it still is and it's a place where he wanted people to come and visit and for decades, people have come and continued to visit. Looks like somebody left a kindness rock. Let's take a look at it. Oh, look at this and loving memory of Jared White. Maybe so. I didn't even think about that. But people come out here and leave memorials to loved ones. What a beautiful idea. And that's sort of what Shangrila is meant to be a place where you can come and feel the magic. You can see lots of people have left toys. This is very common. You will find toys hiding all over this village. They're the ones that live here. Now, the toys looks like this has become a popular place for the toys to go. Uh But yes, it's meant to be, I mean, again, it's, it's Shangrila. Henry meant for it to be a place that people could visit and uh you know, feel at peace, Shangri it's meant to be. It's Henry's paradise, but it's a paradise. He wanted to share with his neighbors and with people, we're just gonna walk through the uh we're gonna walk through the village from uh beginning to end here. So you can really just get a sense of the size and the scope as we walk through. And again, if you want more of the history and details on this village, uh there is a story on W R L dot com, I will put a link in the comments so that you're able to see it if you want to. But let's just take a walk through and appreciate that. There was a man decades ago who built this and it's still here, this little paradise on earth. When you come here, you can feel how special it is. You can feel the magic. And that as he was fighting a terminal illness, he was building this to be a place that he could enjoy. But also a place that people could enjoy for decades, decades and decades after he was gone. And again, it's only only about an hour away from Raleigh. You first saw it 50 years ago, John Wilkerson, I would have loved to have seen it when it was much newer though. It has held up wonderfully his family. Of course, it shows the love of his family as well to continue caring for it and making sure that it remains a paradise that people can visit. They give you a sense of the size of these buildings. Most of them are maybe 4 to 8 ft tall, depending on the size. The church is very tall. Now, there is more the village ends here. But you can see that he also decorated his yard. There's a beautiful seating area over there that's built of stone and a bird bath. And most importantly, I know that over here there's the sign, welcome, feel free to tour Shangri La Henry's and that donkey that you see every time you come and he seems to be carrying some minions with him today. And if you go down here, there's one last piece that I think is very important in a paradise. By the way, here's a swimming pool. This isn't, this isn't the piece that I think is important in a paradise, but it probably is important to a lot of people. But down here there's a visitor's journal so you can record that you came. I've written in this myself to share my memories of my days coming. And I've made many memories here with loved ones and family and people leave their, their thank yous to Henry and share about how special their day was. And the memory that they've made decades later visiting Shangri La Paradise on Earth built by a man and what he wanted will close with his words once again because I think that's the message of Shangri La. Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man. And he has continued to be a friend to man for many, many decades. <p>I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilmoth in the severe weather center, we now have a level one risk for part of the viewing area. It's our northwestern counties under a level one risk for severe storms today. This does not include the triangle, but it does include northern Durham County, northern Orange County person county, part of Granville County and part of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The timeline for these storms will be later on this evening. So most of the day is dry today, we'll have mostly sunny skies. It's going to be very warm and then by five o'clock we'll start to see some of the showers and storms. Those continue through 789 o'clock by 11 o'clock or so, they're starting to exit the area. So it's really just late this evening. So if you're headed to the pool, maybe you're headed out to one of the area lakes, you'll be ok most of the day. But have the W R L Weather app on hand, if you plan to be out this evening, that's when we expect some of those storms, we could reach 89 this afternoon and that will be the hottest so far this year. So definitely feeling like summer time, the storms that arrive this evening, they're coming with a cold front and you will feel the difference as we head into Sunday, it will be cooler, it will be less humid. We do not have rain in the forecast Sunday. It's going to be a gorgeous finish to the weekend with partly cloudy skies are high up to 75 on Sunday. We're warming it back up on Monday, partly cloudy with a high temperature of 82. Back into the upper eight Tuesday, 87 for the high and then staying pretty quiet Wednesday through Friday of next week with high temperatures in the lower 80.</p>

President Joe Biden addresses the nation from the Oval Office after Congress voted to cut spending and extend the debt ceiling for two years.

<p>Americans when I ran for president, I was told the days of bipartisanship are over and the Democrats and Republicans can no longer work together. But I refuse to believe that because America can never give into that way of thinking. Look, the only way American democracy can function is through compromise and consensus. And that's what I work to do as your president, you know, to forge bipartisan agreement where it's possible and where it's needed. I've signed more than 350 bipartisan laws thus far, almost 2.5 years, including the historic law that rebuilding America so that we can rank number one in the world in infrastructure instead of where we're ranked now number 13 in the world, another historic law, rebuilding our manufacturing base. So that will lead the world once again in making semiconductor chips so much more and so so many more and so many more sophisticated ones. And now a bipartisan budget agreement. This is vital because it's because it's essential to the progress we made over the last few years is keeping full faith and credit of the United States of America and passing a budget that continues to grow our economy and reflects our values as a nation. That's why I'm speaking tonight to report on the crisis of verdict and what we're doing to protect America's future. Passing this budget agreement was critical. The stakes could not have been higher if we had failed to reach an agreement on the budget. There were extreme voices threatening to take America for the first time in our 247 year history and to default on our national debt, nothing, nothing would have been more irresponsible. Nothing would have been more catastrophic. Our economy would have been thrown into a recession. Retirement accounts for millions of Americans would have been decimated. Eight million Americans would have lost their jobs. Default would have been have destroyed our nation's credit rating which would have made everything from mortgages to car loans, to funding for the government much more expensive. And it would have taken years to climb out of that hole. And America standing as the most trusted, reliable financial partner in the world would have been shattered. So it was critical to reach an agreement and it's very good news for the American people. No one got everything they want but the American people got what they needed. We averted an economic crisis, an economic collapse. We're cutting spending and bringing the deficits down. At the same time. We're protecting important priorities from social security to Medicare, to Medicaid, to veterans, to our transformational investments in infrastructure. And clean energy. I want to commend Senator Speaker mccarthy, you know, uh he and I uh we and our teams, we were able to get along and get things done. We were straightforward with one another. Completely honest with one another, respectful with one another. Both sides operated in good faith. Both sides kept their word. And I also want to commend other congressional leaders, house minority leader, Jeffries, Senate majority leader Schumer Senate, minority leader mcconnell, they acted responsibly and put the good of the country ahead of politics. The final vote in both chambers was overwhelming. Far more bipartisan than anyone thought was possible. So I want to thank the members of Congress who voted to pass this agreement, which I'm gonna sign tomorrow and become the law. So here's what the deal does. First, it cuts spending and over the next 10 years, the deficit will be cut by more than $1 trillion and that will be on top of the record 1.7 trillion $1.7 trillion. I already cut the deficit in my first two years in office and it's clear we're all in a much more fiscally responsible course than the one I inherited when I took office. Four years ago, when I came to office, the deficit had increased every year, the previous four years and nearly $8 trillion were added to the national debt in the last administration. And now we're turning things around and that's good for America. You know, my dad used to have an expression. He said, Joey, don't tell me what you value, show me your budget. I'll tell you what you value. That's at the heart of this debate. What do we value protecting seniors? You may remember during my State of the Union address, there was, there was a spirit exchange between me and a few Republicans spontaneously occurring on the floor of the House of Representatives. I was pointing out that for years, some of them were putting forward proposals to cut Social Security Medicare and some of them that night took exception and they said very loudly that that wasn't true. So I asked them on the floor at that night, I said, ask them a simple question. Will you agree not to cut social security not to cut Medicare? Would they agree to protect these essential programs? A lifeline for millions of Americans programs that these Americans have been paying into every single paycheck they've earned since they started working. And that provides so much peace of mind with the bright lights and cameras on those few Republicans who were protesting, they agreed, they said they wouldn't cut it. That's how we protected Social Security Medicare from the beginning and from a being cut period, health care was another priority for me. A top priority. I made it clear from the outset, I would not agree to any cuts in Medicaid, another essential lifeline for millions of Americans, including Children in poverty, the elderly, in nursing homes and Americans living with disabilities. The original House Republican proposal would have cut health care for up to 21 million Americans on Medicaid. And I said no, and Medicare is protected and so are millions of people most in need. Look, I've long believed that the only one truly sacred obligation that the government has is to prepare those we send into harm's way and care for them and their families when they come home and when they don't come home, that's why my last budget provided va hospitals with additional funding for more doctors, nurses and equipment to accommodate the needs of veterans and more appointments. The House Republican plan would have met 30 fewer million va health care visits for our veterans. We didn't let that happen. In addition, this bill fully funds the bipartisan Pact Act. The most significant law in decades for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits and for their families expands access to those veterans and their families, to health care and to disability benefits. Look, we're investing in America in our people and in our future, we've created over 13 million new jobs. Nearly 800,000 manufacturing jobs. Where is it written? And America can't lead the world again. In manufacturing, unemployment is at 3.7% more Americans are working today than ever in the history of this country. And inflation has dropped 10 straight months in a row. In this debate, I refused to put what was responsible for all this economic progress on the chopping block. This bipartisan agreement protects the law that will help us build the best infrastructure in the world, fully protects the Chips and Science Act, which is going to bring key parts of our supply chain to America. So we don't have to rely on others like semiconductors, those tiny computer chips smaller than the tip of your finger that affect nearly everything we rely on from cell phones to having building automobiles, to the most sophisticated weapon systems. And so much more, we protected another law that I passed and signed last year that finally beat Big Pharma, which I've been trying to do for over 30 years. It finally gives Medicare the power to negotiate lower drug prices just like the VA has been able to do for veterans. This law has already dramatically cut the cost of insulin for seniors from as much as $400 a month to just $35 a month for insulin negotiating lower drug prices, not only saves seniors a lot of money, it saves the country, a lot of money, 100 and $60 billion. That's not having to be paid out because we're drug prices are more rational. We pay the highest drug prices of any industrial nation in the world. And it's just the beginning, you know, we also protected the most significant breakthrough ever ever in dealing with the existential threat of climate change. Today, new wind and solar power is cheaper than fossil fuel since I've been in office, clean energy and advanced manufacturing have brought in $470 billion in private investment that's going to create thousands of jobs, good paying jobs all across this country and help the environment. At the same time. Remember at the beginning of this debate, some of our Republican colleagues are determined to get the clean energy investments. I said, no, we kept them all and there's more and there's so much more to do. We're going to do even more to reduce the deficit. We need to control spending if we're going to do that. But we also have to raise revenue and go after tax cheats and make sure everybody is paying their fair share. No one, I promise no one making more less than $400,000 a year will pay a penny more in federal taxes. But like most of you at home, I know the federal tax system isn't fair. That's why I kept my commitment again, that no one earning less than $400,000 a year will pay a penny more in federal taxes. That's why last year I secured more funding to go more IRS funding to go after wealthy tax cheats the nonpartisan congressional budget office and it is nonpartisan says that this bill will bring in 100 and $50 billion and other outside experts expect that it would save as much as $400 billion because it's forcing people to pay their fair share. Republicans may not like it, but I'm gonna make sure the wealthy pay their fair share. I'm also proposed closing over a dozen special interest tax loopholes for big oil crypto traders, hedge fund billionaires saving taxpayers billions of dollars. Repub Republicans defended every single one of these special interest loopholes, every single one, but I'm going to be coming back and with your help, I'm going to win right now. Catch this right now. The average billionaire in America pays just 8% in federal taxes. 8% teachers and firefighters pay more than that. That's why I proposed a minimum tax for billionaires. Republicans are against it, but I'm gonna keep fighting for it. No billionaire should pay less in federal taxes than the teacher or firefighter. Look, let me close with this. I know bipartisanship is hard and unity is hard, but we can never stop trying because in moments like this one, the ones we just faced where the American economy and the world economy is at risk of collapsing. There's no other way, no matter how tough our politics gets. We see each other as not as adversaries, but as fellow Americans treat each other with dignity and respect to join forces as Americans to stop shouting lower the temperature and work together to pursue progress, secure prosperity and keep the promise of America for everybody. As I've said, my inaugural address without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and, and fury and we can never become that country. I can honestly say I can honestly say to you tonight that I've never been more optimistic about America's future. We just need to remember who we are. We are the United States of America and there's nothing, nothing we can't do when we do it together. So, thank you all for listening, taking the time tonight to listen to me.
