RALEIGH, N.C. — Brown-Wynne Funeral Home and Mitchell Funeral Home, two of Raleigh’s oldest businesses, are merging.

As of May 1, the Mitchell Funeral Home will become part of the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home operation and operate under that name.

The merger follows a deal between the parent companies of each funeral home. Service Corporation International, which operates Brown-Wynne, acquired Alderwoods Group, the operator of Mitchell, in November.

"With Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park joining Brown-Wynne Funeral Homes, the tradition of excellence both businesses are known for will truly benefit the families of Raleigh," said Ronald Maness, general manager of Brown-Wynne Funeral Homes and Crematory. "We are committed to the great histories and reputation of our company, and this addition will allow us to serve families with an even greater purpose."

As part of the merger, the Mitchell Funeral Home at 600 St. Mary’s St. in Raleigh will close.

However, the Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, located at 7209 Glenwood Ave., will remain open.

The Brown-Wynne Funeral Home company dates to 1836. The Mitchell Funeral Home traces its founding to 1874.

Brown-Wynne became part of the nationwide Dignity Network of funeral-care providers in 1991.
