The Town of Chapel Hill is considering permanently locating a library branch inside University Mall, the mayor indicated in a memorandum to town council Monday.

"It appears to me that are several reasons to explore this offer," Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt wrote.

He cited potential costs savings and the desirable location, which is accessible to public transit.

The mayor and other town leaders recently met with representatives of the mall owners, Madison-Marquette, to ask questions about ownership and design control of the property.

Kleinschmidt asked Town Manager Roger L. Stancil to prepare a comprehensive assessment of the proposal for the council.
