RALEIGH, N.C. — Thirteen North Carolina-based companies cracked the latest “Fortune 500” list that is published annually by the financial magazine.

Bank of America rose two spots to No. 9.

The next highest firm is Lowe’s at 47, an improvement of one spot from last year.

Progress Energy, meanwhile, fell 40 spots to No. 288.
