Woman, 82, killed after passenger bus crashes on I-77 in Charlotte

Law enforcement authorities in Charlotte on Sunday shut down a stretch of Interstate 77 in Charlotte after a person was killed when a privately-owned bus crashed and caught fire, officials said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Law enforcement authorities in Charlotte on Sunday shut down a stretch of Interstate 77 in Charlotte after a person was killed when a privately-owned bus crashed and caught fire, officials said.

The accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. at the Morehead exit, police said.

According to reports, an 82-year-old woman died at the scene. It wasn't immediately clear if she was a passenger on the bus. Her identity was pending

WCNC-TV reported that the bus driver said he was attempting to exit the freeway at the 9C exit, but lost control of the vehicle, striking a concrete barrier divider by the West Boulevard exit of southbound I-77.

Video from the scene showed a plume of black smoke coming from the burning vehicle.
