Man shot by Tarboro officer during home burglary died, police say

Tarboro Police Chief Jesse Webb said officers were responding to a 911 call of a reported burglary at a home in the 3500 block of North Main Street around 8:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred.

According to police, officers confronted a man near the back door of the home. After a brief encounter, one officer discharged his weapon, striking the man.

Despite first aid efforts, the man died.

No officers were injured in the incident, Webb said.

Police haven't yet released the 911 call, and the couple who live in the home declined to comment Wednesday.

Webb called the shooting "a completely isolated incident," noting that there hasn't been a rash of break-ins nearby and it didn't appear the suspected burglar knew the couple.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. The officer, whose name hasn't been released, is on administrative duty.

The name of the suspected burglar was being withheld until family can be notified.

"Members of the Tarboro Police Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted by this tragedy," police issued in a release. "We pray for comfort and healing for the families involved and ask for patience and understanding during the investigative process."
