Bullet flies through window while deaf 82-year-old woman watches TV in Durham home

She was sitting inside watching TV in her home in Durham when it happened.

To make it even scarier – she is hard of hearing.

It was a typical afternoon for Mary Jane Setzer, who was catching up on her favorite shows and the latest news when her peaceful afternoon came crashing to a halt.

“I was sitting there, and then it was a loud like a bomb," she said.

At first, she thought someone was knocking at her door.

"I get up, open the door. Nobody was there," she said.

Instead, it was a bullet that came flying through her window. The hole is still clearly visible in the glass – and the bullet missed her by just a few inches.

“I was shaking. I didn’t know what to do," said Setzer.

This happened around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, just a few blocks from the Museum of Life and Science.

Setzer used a translating communication device to call for help, dialing 911.

Durham Police is now investigating the shooting as a possible drive-by.

Setzer found a bullet under her table this morning. She says she's still scared.

“I’m afraid it will happen again. Yes. I’m afraid to sit there. They might shoot the window. It might hit me," she said.

Neighbors say they heard six or seven shots – and that this is the first of any shooting they can remember happening in the neighborhood. Thankfully, nobody was injured.

“Im okay. I’m fine now," said Setzer.
