Thirteenth District Congressman Ted Budd announced Wednesday morning that he will seek the Republican nomination for the 2022 Senate election.

All right, congressman. So, what made you decide this race at this time? Mhm. Thanks for asking. So, I've uh been proud to serve in the five counties and now the 10 counties in the 13th congressional district. But before that, I've spent the bulk of my life in small businesses, not in big government. I've made payroll. I've created jobs. I know what it's like to pay those quarterly taxes. And I think we need somebody with some real world experience and, you know, including the family businesses and the businesses I've created. I grew up on a family farm, and agriculture is the biggest industry in north Carolina. So, I think they need somebody that understands agriculture across our state. All right. And what differences will you draw between yourself and congressman? Former Congressman Mark walker? Uh I kind of see that it between you and governor. McCrory will have that narrative is going to go. But you and walker. It kind of goes back to the first question is, I've created jobs. I've made payroll weekend and week out, still do. That's been the bulk of my business and again, that agricultural background I want to be known as the american first priority senator from north Carolina serving in the U. S. Senate. So I think it's a great opportunity for anybody. Look, there's a lot of good candidates in this race and much respect to all of them, but I want to make sure that people know that my background is not primarily as a politician. Um, I know how to make payroll and I know how to get government out of the way of working men and women. The slogan America first, that's all over your campaign. What does that phrase mean to you? Yeah, this is about, let's have less government and let's have the growth of the uh, the entrepreneurially the entrepreneurial sector. Let's make sure we have low taxes, let's make sure that we preserve opportunity for not only this generation, but the next generation that's coming up. We want this always to be where our next generation can do better than this one. And right now that's very concerning. People have massive debts, not only on them, we need to rein in the growth of government because it's getting in the way of future opportunities. And that's one of the things. It's, it's all it's about people first, not government first. When you say ran in the growth of government, can you point to anything that you or when there was a Republican Congress and a Republican president, the last few years did to rein in the growth of government? Because, I mean, the continued to increase absolutely one of the, that's one of my main concerns and I come at this as a fiscal conservative. So I want to make sure that, uh, we don't get in the way when it comes to regulations. You gotta look at regulations as another tax on small businesses and communities. It makes people more reluctant to start businesses more reluctant to launch out on their own. And if you look at the reins act, if you look at the reigning in on the federal register, uh, what we've done during the first four years I was there, um, it's quite impressive. I think that gave people the confidence to launch out And create what was the lowest unemployment for minorities for women in the last 50 years. And I'm proud of being part of that. Yeah, if you're getting into this race, does that mean that laura trump is not all I can tell you is that I'm running? I can't speak for laura. I can tell you, I have much respect for all the trump family and I can tell you that I'm running. What about Mark Robinson? If he had gotten in, would you have stayed out or would you have gotten in as well? You know, that's a hypothetical, but I can tell you, I have amazing respect for what Mark Robinson has done. Um, he's phenomenal and I consider him a good friend. Well, let me take it out of the hypothetical. Did you delay your announcement at all when he was considering? Yeah, mark and I had discussions over the week or 10 days in the interim and look, I want to know what the field looks like and I'm sure he did as well. So we both thought about it and prayed about it. And uh, of course it's, this is not about me, this is about having the right candidate and one who can win, not only the primary but the general and carry on the America first priorities and be a great representative and bring north Carolina values to the U. S. Senate. Do you think of the president's newly proposed american families plan? I believe that's what he's calling it. What I can see is $10 trillion dollars of more spending in the hopper that's gonna ultimately choke off future opportunities for this generation and the next. So I'm very concerned about the whole litany of a spending that biden proposes. It comes from a world view that says government first. And if there's a problem, government is the solution. Remember what Reagan says, the nine worst words as I'm from the government and I'm here to help. So we don't want government to be the first solution. We want the ideas from the people in the private sector and individuals and small businesses to come out there with great ideas and solutions and not always propose trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars of spending. And that's what you're going to hear from biden and it's definitely what you're going to hear tonight in the State of the Union. Do you think Ronald Reagan would be welcome in today's Republican Party? I'd like to think so. Look, he's had a great spirit. Uh, that was in my formative years of thinking early about politics and there's a lot to be learned from him. Okay, um, your your, your announcement video. It's clever, certainly, but I mean, it just kind of seems like you're running against slogans, what is a woke socialist wasteland? And do you have any concerns that hyperbole like that is not healthy for our political discourse? Anybody who knows me personally knows that I'm welcome to have a conversation when you think about the very first bill that was passed in last Congress out of financial services? Not only did I support not only was it my bill, but Maxine waters spoke on that bill, so I want you to know that I can reach across the aisle when there's areas of agreement and about 70 of the bills that come out of Congress are bipartisan so I can do that. But when you see the early stages of cancel culture, whether it's across technology platforms or whether it's people being screamed down with an opposing view on a college campus, that's very dangerous. We need to have more free speech and more debate whether you agree with me or not, not less, and you need to make sure that whether it's on media platforms, social media platforms, our own college campuses, we allow free speech and people of diverging opinions. Okay, and then, once again, why you as opposed to one of the other candidates? And let's speak specifically to the Republican primary, the republican voters who I know, you know, that's that's first out of the gate here. Well, when you go back and you look at my history is largely not been in politics, it's been either on a family farm here in Davie County, which is that was a commercial chicken operator for years, a cattle farm, um working in a landscape company, working as a janitor over in near Winston Salem. I mean, that's my formative experience in a family business and seeing it grow and seeing its struggle starting mind businesses later on. And I think we need to bring that real world experience whether it's ag or whether it's small business to Washington D. C. They need to know what it's like to start a business to make a payroll to pay those taxes. And I think that's what, you know, 80% of businesses in this country are in small businesses. So they need to have somebody there that understands the forgotten men and women across our country. An awful lot of people in Congress though, who that is their background. They are some sort of business owner. Is that really an underrepresented viewpoint in the United States Congress? I think we could always have more, we don't need more lawyers and permanent politicians. We need those who really represent the north Carolina values and bring those to Washington D. C. Alright, if you win, will you serve multiple terms or you term limit yourself? I've got my eye on the primary and also the general and we'll figure it out from there. But I do support term limits. That's legislation that I've always supported. All right. What else do you want? People to know anything Travis? I think this is it. I think I look forward to talking to you more. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner, I'm tracking a front that's dropping in on our area this morning. We will end up seeing most of the rain between late morning and say late afternoon as this moves from north to south slowly across our area. I mean, even though we're looking at, you know, a decent coverage of rain here as it moves through the amounts, the totals that we actually see in the rain gauges are going to be pretty light. We're talking about less than 1/10 of an inch in most places. We'll pause it there at lunchtime and we're seeing some showers from Raleigh North through there at noon. It starts to slide southward during the afternoon. At three o'clock, we're drying out from Durham to Roxboro, but seeing some showers from Rocky Mountain to Goldsboro to Fayetteville to Southern Pines. By five o'clock, the rain is over in the triangle but continues to affect folks around Fayetteville, Clinton and Goldsboro. And by around seven o'clock, it has pushed east of our area. We take a look at Durham this morning. We're seeing mostly cloudy skies. Clouds are really starting to thicken up as that front gets closer to us, it's much warmer than it was yesterday. We're starting off with our temperatures in the fifties instead of the thirties that we saw yesterday. So these temperatures heading out are going to be anywhere from 15 to 20 degrees warmer than yesterday. So you don't need a big coat, but a jacket will feel comfortable again. Take along the umbrella too. If you're going to be out at any point today, especially late morning into the latter part of the afternoon, temperatures will be mild in the mid to upper seventies, but we'll have just a few light showers. Durham Bulls are in the middle of a home stand right now. And even though we do have some rain in the forecast, that rain will be out of here by the time we get to six o'clock in Durham, that may still be in our southern counties by that point, but it won't be in Durham any longer. Thursday and Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday. All looking nice and dry with some sunshine and game time. Temperatures in the low seventies, at least through Saturday is Saturday looking beautiful temperatures through the afternoon will be in the mid seventies under mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. So looking pretty, it's a mild week, normal high 75 and that's what we're seeing through Saturday. But then we see 80 is returning for Sunday. That's not going to be a record. The record for Sunday is 90 but Monday 86 and then Tuesday, we climbed to 89 and the record is 90. So that one is definitely within the grasp. We could end up with a record high on Tuesday. It's the only wet day today. After that, we're dry and we'll see continued warming into early next week.
