Britton Buchanan takes 2nd place on 'The Voice'

Buchanan on Monday night performed an original song that he said he wrote while in chemistry class at Lee County High School. That song, “Where You Come From,” made it to the No. 1 spot on the iTunes chart Monday and remained in first place Tuesday afternoon.

Buchanan also needed the second song he performed Monday night to get into the top 10 on iTunes, and achieved that goal just before noon.

Regardless of the success on the charts, Buchanan failed to get enough votes to win the competition.

Buchanan said earlier that he would be happy regardless of the results, and that is partially due to his relationship with coach Alicia Keys.

“Everything Alicia’s done for me, I’m so grateful for. It’s been amazing,” Buchanan said.

“When he sent his 30 original songs to say ‘Hey, I think one of these might work,’ it was really exciting just to hear the breadth of his capacity and his work and obviously that also means that he has an album ready tomorrow,” Keys said.

Although he didn't win, family members watching from Sandford said they were proud of Buchanan.

"Britton has done us very proud. We said all along it didn't matter. He was a winner in our hearts," Buchanan's aunt, Danielle Riddle, said. "He has made his community and his family proud. This is just the beginning of the future for him.l"

While family and friends watched the results from Sanford, Buchanan's parents were in Los Angeles for the big performance.

“I was completely in tears,” Shannon Buchan said of seeing her son perform Monday night. “To see him up there, performing his own music, was just phenomenal.”

The Buchanans have watched their little boy play in bars around the Triangle for the last six years and were amazed to see his song reach No. 1 on the iTunes chart.

“To see his song that he put so much into be No. 1 and then America saw what we saw. I mean, for Britton, I can’t imagine the feeling. As parents, we’re just so proud of him and where he’s come with this,” Todd Buchanan said.
