RALEIGH, N.C. — Brutally cold weather moved in Sunday night, and temperatures were expected to plunge well below freezing multiple nights this week.

Sunday was a mild day, with highs in the mid 50s, but everything was changing overnight with temperatures falling below freezing, dropping to 25 degrees.

Stretch of freezing weather arrives soon

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be a very cold one," said WRAL meteorologist Peta Sheerwood. "We will wake up to morning readings in the mid 20s. You will definitely need to bundle up."

High temperatures will get to the low 40s on Monday and Tuesday, and lows will be 23 degrees on both nights.

Temperatures will warm up slightly to the mid-40s on Wednesday, and overnight lows will hit 26 degrees.

WRAL meteorologist Zach Maloch said it's one of the coldest stretches we have seen in almost a year.

There was a stretch of four days with temperatures below freezing in late January and early February 2019.

Thursday will be less frigid, with highs around 50 degrees and lows hovering at freezing.

Rain chances don't return until the weekend, though, and skies will be mostly clear throughout the cold snap.
