RALEIGH, N.C. — It was cool enough for a jacket on Tuesday morning, and WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner says it will get even colder later this week.

Temperatures were in the mid 40s early Tuesday -- 15 degrees colder than they were Monday morning -- and they warmed into the 70s as the day continued.

"It's the coldest morning since May 14," Gardner said. "We just hit 46 degrees at 7 a.m."

Rain was expected to move in Tuesday night and Wednesday morning with a cold front overnight, bringing more relief to drought-like conditions in central North Carolina.

The first half of Wednesday will be very rainy, with scattered showers likely throughout central North Carolina. Temperatures will be mild, in the upper 60s north of the Triangle and in the low 70s south of the Triangle.

The rain should move out by Wednesday afternoon, and chilly temperatures will move in. Temperatures will be cold, in the low 40s, for Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Thursday, the first day of the North Carolina State Fair, could be the coolest day of the week, with a high of only 62 degrees.

There will be plenty of sunshine Thursday and throughout the weekend, so it should be a beautiful, brisk opening weekend for the fair.

Temperatures on Friday will get as warm as 65 degrees in Raleigh, and Saturday and Sunday will be warmer, with highs in the low 70s.

7-Day Forecast

A chance of rain returns Monday when highs get into the mid 70s.
