A young breast cancer survivor who grew up in Cary was killed last week in a hit-and-run in Chicago.

Sophie Allen, 27, was walking with a friend near Wrigley Field when she was hit.

Allen graduated Raleigh’s Enloe Magnet High School and Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.

Just 51 days before she was killed, Allen had successfully completed aggressive treatment for breast cancer.

She <a href="https://www.wral.com/video/triangle-race-for-the-cure-celebrates-25-years/19653870/">spoke about her treatment with WRAL's Mikaya Thurmond</a> as the Triangle celebrated 25 years of Race for the Cure.

Sophie Allen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 at 26 years old. Allen talked about what Triangle Race for the Cure and the Susan G. Komen organization means to her.

<p>Triangle race for the cure is celebrating 25 years of raising money and also awareness to fight breast cancer. A virtual race day is tomorrow and events are taking place all week long to help get everyone excited here to tell us about the event and what it means to her is Sophie Allen, Good morning Sophie thank you for waking up early to be with us. So let's just get right to that. What does this of it mean to you? Um so this year it means a lot to me in last October which is also breast cancer awareness month. I was diagnosed with breast cancer myself at 26. Um so that was pretty uh life changing I guess um and participated in active treatment and then around the time that the races here was getting um spun up. Um a friend reached out and was like let's absolutely participate this year and I was so excited because Susan G Komen and so many organizations like Komen have just provided so many resources and so much critical funding for research that has directly impacted both my treatment and millions of other men and women's treatment for breast cancer. So it's just really important and awesome to be able to pay that forward after having been able to benefit so much. And one of the things that you just talked about their you're 26 years old and it raises the importance really of making sure you get screened. What would you say? Just about that part, no matter how old you are? Yeah, I would say that no matter how old you are and it can affect anybody, it's important to know your body and to just be really make sure that your regularly checking your breasts in your chest area, just if anything seems out of whack. It never hurts to go to a doctor and just say, hey I don't I don't remember this, this doesn't feel quite right and you take a look because it's never a bad idea to just make sure um I had the great benefit of having doctors that pushed me through the process at my age, I was like there's no way this could affect me, this is just some random abnormality. And every doctor was like let's just take one more step, get one more test and confirm that everything is ok. And in the end it's a really good thing that they pushed me and I had such a great healthcare team behind me. So that means we were able to find the cancer and then be able to treat it effectively. How are you doing now? Yeah, doing well, I just finished kind of the hardest part, I had surgery and um april after finishing chemotherapy in february and so I'm just kind of getting back in the swing of things, I've got a few more hurdles to overcome, but I've got a lot of support of a really great healthcare team. I'm being treated at the cancer institute, which is also a huge party and and supporter of french pedicure and um and I'm just looking forward to, you know, kind of getting back to life and getting out of that treatment phase. Um and I'm glad that Covid is ending. So we're all getting back to life. I'm so happy to hear that. Finally, before we wrap up, where can we watch on saturday? There's going to be a short program at 10 a.m. Shared on the Youtube page and people are able to register to participate through saturday evening um and fundraising goes through the end of the year when you find them to participate, you get a T shirt, you get to be a part of us on this great organization and we're asking people to share their participation with the hashtag hashtag race where you are. This year's event is virtual and we're looking forward to having so many, often participants and supporters. Sophie, your strength is admirable and your smile is radiant.
