Bragg paratrooper killed in Afghanistan

An XVIII Airborne Corps paratrooper was killed in action in Afghanistan on Wednesday, officials announced Thursday.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — An XVIII Airborne Corps paratrooper was killed in action in Afghanistan on Wednesday, officials announced Thursday.

Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Leggett, 39, of Ruskin, Fla., was an assistant operations sergeant with A Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion at Fort Bragg.

“The Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion of XIII Airborne Corps has recently suffered the very tragic loss of a fellow Sky Dragon," Lt. Col. Gabriel Barton, Leggett’s battalion commander, said in a statement. "Matthew Leggett was an exceptional non-commissioned officer and a valued member of our team."

Leggett served three combat tours of duty.
