RALEIGH, N.C. — Officials with the Wake County Boys and Girls club want to remind parents that their facilities are open for business and ready to educate children this summer.

“Families especially low income families might look at some of the other programs and think ‘I’m not going to be able to afford that’ well that’s not going to be an issue here," said John Welch, vice president of the Boys and Girls Club.

It only costs $7.50 a year for children to attend the program. Some families aren't even able to afford that, Welch said.

"We have scholarships for kids that can’t even afford the $7.50 yearly membership," he said. "Money is not the point, it’s about getting kids into a safe wholesome environment so parents can do what they need to do."

Kids attending programs get a free meal and have the chance to participate in fun and educational programs each day.

This summer especially leaders are focusing on academics, knowing many students faced a learning setback this past school year.

Donations have dried up among many non-profits during the pandemic, including at the Wake County Boys and Girls Club. Even though need has increased, the Club is $11,000 short of their $1.2 million fundraising goal.
