DURHAM, N.C. — The man accused of shooting a pregnant woman and her boyfriend while they were visiting a neighbor at a Durham apartment complex last week appeared Tuesday in court for a preliminary bond hearing.
Federal marshals on Monday arrested Torie Damonte Graves, 26, of Mebane, on the same street where the shooting happened a week ago at an apartment on 1126 Hoover Road. During a court hearing Tuesday, a judge agreed to keep his bond at $1 million in connection with the Jan. 23 incident. Graves was ordered to return to court next month.

Graves is accused of shooting a pregnant woman and her long-time boyfriend while the couple and their two children were in the apartment. Police have not publicly identified the victims, but authorities said the woman gave birth during an emergency C-section operation right after the shooting. The baby boy suffers from daily seizures, relatives said.

The woman and her boyfriend are said to be recovering from their injuries, but it was not clear if they were still hospitalized.

Police have not identified a motive in the shooting, but a family member said she does not believe the two were the intended targets, suggesting that the victims may have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. The two were visiting a neighbor when a knock on the door was followed by gunfire, the relative said.

Marva Norwood is the aunt of the woman who was shot. She said her niece "is progressing."

"I think, now in this time, our family has come together a lot more . . . than we ever have," Norwood said, adding that the suspect's actions were unprovoked.

"This was a senseless act for someone who did not think" about the consequences of his actions, Norwood said. "He did not think."

The aunt has started GoFundeMe page to try and move the family out of those apartments.
