Atlantic Beach, N.C. — Authorities called off the search for a missing 17-year-old swimmer after his body was found at Fort Macon State Park Monday afternoon.
Coast Guard officials said his body was recovered from the beach at 2 p.m.
"We are all saddened that the search efforts of the Coast Guard, fire department, police and Marines came to this tragic end," Cmdr. Jeffrey Dixon said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."
The 17-year-old went missing on Sunday while swimming in the ocean off Atlantic Beach. Coast Guard and Marines helicopters accompanied local and Coast Guard water rescue crews in searching for the boy on Sunday, through the night and into Monday.
