The price of eggs have skyrocketed in North Carolina, one of the effects last year's bird flu has had on the state.

In 2022, bird flu killed millions of egg-laying hens, a result of one of the largest outbreaks of bird flu in history.

Now shoppers are feeling the effects, as the price of eggs have soared to above $5 in some locations like Food Lion on Timber Drive.

Other places like Target on Timber Drive and Walmart on Fayetteville Road reported 18-eggs being sold at $7.29 and $8.12 respectively.

For some shoppers like Brittany Dixon, the prices are getting out of hand.

"I've seen som $4-$5 but this is getting kind of crazy," Dixon said. "Everything across the board, not just eggs. Eggs are a noticeable difference, but everything is definitely going up in cost."

For some, they cant even afford to eat them.

"I used to eat them on a regular basis and I don't eat them anymore. I just can't afford them," said shopper Paul White. "It's a really big impact."

While the cost of eggs are high, experts say prices on a month-to-month basis have already gone down.

"It had to flatten out," said John Coleman, an economics professor at Duke University. "There may be temporary supply disruptions as businesses have to contend with supply chain issues. I expect these issues to be resolved. These prices should come down."

The Executive Director of the North Carolina Egg Association said egg prices should continue to come down unless there are "unforeseen circumstances."
