RALEIGH, N.C. — The once-every-five-years check-up required for people with a handicapped parking windshield placard would be waived for people over 80 years old under legislation moving at the statehouse.

The change was tacked onto a bill dealing with motorcycle license plates for disabled veterans. It was suggested by an 86-year-old woman who brought it up with state Sen. Warren Daniel, R-Burke, at a church function.

"It's just a commonsense amendment that eliminates one more government requirement," Daniel said.

The state already has permanent handicapped parking designations that don't have to be renewed. Daniel's proposal deals with removable windshield placards issued to people who haven't been certified as "totally and permanently disabled" under state law.

Current law requires people who fall into that category to renew every five years with a medical recertification, regardless of their age.
