Bill Leslie: Sleeping in on a snow day
Bill Leslie reflects on his years waking up in the middle of the night to help with hectic snow coverage -- and his good fortune to be able to finally enjoy a quiet snowy morning.
Posted — UpdatedFor decades I got up in the middle of the night in the middle of snowstorms and made my way to work at WRAL-TV. Not once did I miss my morning slot. I even drove to work during the 23-inch blizzard of January, 2000. That was pretty scary.
Now that I’m a year and a half into retirement I must admit I love the luxury of watching others report on the snow. It gives me time to take photographs and videos, enjoy some pumpkin pancakes and play with Rufus and the grandchildren.
The morning after a snowfall can be the prettiest part. The shimmering show gives me goosebumps. I never had time to savor this beauty before. Now I do and I am grateful.
