Just a few hours ago, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the CDC announced that they are no longer recommending that fully vaccinated people need wear masks. This recommendation holds true whether you are inside or outside. I think it's a great milestone. A great day has been made possible by the extraordinary success we've had in vaccinating so many americans so quickly to date. We've given out 250 million shots In 114 days and we're seeing the results Cases are down in 49 of 50 states. New York Times reported that hospitalizations are the lowest. They've been Since April of 2020 over a year ago, right after the start of the pandemic deaths are down 80% And also at their lowest level since April of 2020. And as the virus tragically rages in other countries, as other nations, even wealthy nations are mired in the challenges of slow vaccine rollout and poor economic conditions. As a result, things are very different here. In less than four months, We've gone from 5.5 To nearly 60 of the adult adults in America at least one shot in their arms. We've gone from stagnation To an economy that is growing faster than it has in nearly 40 years. We've gone from an anemic job creation to a record for job creation for a new administration. All of this is a product of prompt action to roll out the vaccine and boost our economy. As I said in my joint address to the Congress, this vaccination effort has been historic logistical achievement for the United States of America. Over the past 114 days, our vaccination program has led the world and that's due to the incredible hard work of so many people, the scientists and researchers, the drug companies, the National Guard, the U. S. Military fema, the nation's governors, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, everyone who has moved heaven and earth to get as many shots in the arms of as many americans as possible. And it's truly been an all hands on deck for the country effort. You know, some people said we couldn't do this. That would not be until the fall, that we had this many people vaccinated, That 2021 Might be a lost year for our country as 2020 was. But we proved the doubters wrong. I need to single out one More group to praise the american people, the american people for more than a year. You've endured so much and so many lost jobs, So many businesses lost, so many lives a bended and so many months that our kids couldn't be in school. You couldn't see your friends or family, all the moments that mattered so much from birthdays to weddings, to graduations. All postponed and most tragically at all lost lives. As the press your nose. I carry a card in my pocket with the number of lives lost to Covid as of the close of business yesterday, 580,073 lost lives. So many empty chairs. So many times husband or wife. Mean over to touch your spouse. Not there. Moms and dads, sons and daughters, Sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, your neighbors, your coworkers. Having been there in other circumstances. I know it's a little solace right now. But I promise you the day will come when the memory loved one you lost will bring a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eyes. That's how you know you're going to get through it. You will get through it. But it's a long haul. You've endured all this when your country ask you to get vaccinated. You did the american people stepped up. You did what I consider to be your patriotic duty. That's how we've gotten to this day as president. I can say. I'm pleased, but I'm sure the vice president agrees with me. We're not surprised, pleased but not surprised because the simple truth is this the american people have never ever ever ever let their country down. Never This country is proving what we've known. We all known for so long. There's nothing we are unable to do when we put our minds our hearts and our souls into it and we do it together. No I want to be clear. But with the C. D. C. D. C. Is saying what the CDC is not saying the CDC is sane. They have concluded that fully vaccinated people Are at a very very low risk of getting COVID-19. Therefore if you've been fully vaccinated you no longer need to wear a mask. Let me repeat. If you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask. But if you have not been vaccinated or if you're getting a two shot vaccine and you've not gotten your only had your first shot but not your second or you haven't waited the full two weeks after your second shot. You still need to wear a mask. Look, we've gotten this far. Please protect yourself until you get to the finish line because as great as this announcement is today, we don't want to let up. We all know how tough this virus has been. The safest thing for the country is for everyone to get vaccinated and getting vaccinates easier than ever. We've worked so hard. We have 80,000 locations, 90 of you live within five miles of one of those locations. You can find a vaccine site near you by texting your zip code To the following number 4 3 8 8-9. Let me repeat texture. Your zip code 24388- nine. And get the places nearest you. You can go and get vaccinated. Now in many places don't require an appointment, it's free. Just walk in, get the shot. Anyone 12 years or above in age is eligible and for now after a year of hard work and so much sacrifice. The rule is very simple. Get vaccinated or where a mask until you do it's vac said or masks get vaccinated. If you're vaccinated you can be around the vaccinated or unvaccinated people. But if you're not vaccinated or not fully vaccinated you should wear a mask for your own protection and the protection of other unvaccinated people. The choice is yours. You all made this possible. Now let's finish the work of beating this virus and getting everything back to normal. Remember as fast as we've gone, Most people under the age of 65 aren't vaccinated yet. We've opened vaccinations nationally to all adults Just four weeks ago. It's gonna take a little more time for everyone who wants to get vaccinated to get their shots. So all of us, let's be patient, Be patient with one another. You know, some may say I just feel more comfortable, continue to wear a mask. They may feel that way. So if you're someone with a mask, you see them, please treat them with kindness and respect. We've had too much conflict, too much bitterness, too much anger, too much politicization of this issue about wearing mask. Let's put it to rest. Let's remember, we're all americans. Let's remember that we are all in this together. If you're fully vaccinated and can take your mask off, you've earned the right to do something that americans are known for all around the world, greeting others with a smile with a smile. So it's a good day for the country. We aren't done yet. We're still losing too many americans because we still have too many unvaccinated people. We have to get to 70 of adults started on vaccinations and by July the 4th and we have to take this pandemic, tackle it not just here but overseas as well to truly be safe in the long run there's still more work ahead. But I've said many times as tough as this pandemic has been, we will get through it. We will rebuild our economy, reclaim our lives and get back to normal. Laugh again. Well no joy again and we'll smile again you know, and now seem another smile. Look at the smiles and other people's faces. Better days are ahead. I promise you and the best days for America are still to come. I promise you that as well. Thank you. God bless you. We, in fact, if you don't, if you haven't been vaccinated, wear your mask for your own protection and the protection of the people who are also have not been vaccinated yet. It's not an enforcement thing. We're not going to go out and arrest people. But the fact of the matter is I still believe the vast majority of the american people care about the safety of their neighbors. I don't care about the safety of their families. And like I said, if you've been vaccinated, you don't have to wear your mask and you can shake hands. You didn't give each other a hug. But if you have not been vaccinated, please wear the mask. Please wear the mask. Thank you. Is there a definite on your meeting with the republicans, sir? In a very, very good meeting. It was great to be back with so many of the colleagues that I had served with in the Senate. And I am very optimistic that we can reach a reasonable agreement. But even if we don't, it's been a good faith is a good faith effort has been started, compromise on anything other than the corporate tax. We didn't compromise anything. What we did was I laid out what I thought we should be doing, how it should be paid for. And my colleagues in the Senate came back and said they'll come back to me with a counter offer of what they we are prepared to do and fund and how to fund it. And then we'll talk again next week. Good morning. I'm meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. We have a gorgeous day and our forecast, our temperatures are pleasantly cool this morning, skies are clear and our wind is mostly calm. Now. There may be some gusts that happened later on this afternoon. We could be gusting 15 to almost 20 MPH in the middle of the day and then we'll see the wind starting to die down. It's not going to be anything that causes you any real issues, but just a touch on the breezy side. Midday. Our temperatures heading out the door this morning are chilly anywhere from mid forties to mid f depending on where you are. And it's going to be a lovely day today. Lunch outside. Absolutely. If I could put some exclamation points on this, I would almost 70 at lunchtime humidity, low, lots of sunshine, take advantage of this absolute gorgeous afternoon for lunch outside or whatever it is that you can do our highs mid afternoon, 74 in Raleigh, 72 in Durham and 78 in Fayetteville. So such a pretty day. Uh, lots of things to uh to do. It's a very busy time time of year lots of festivals and things. And I imagine with game three, the hurricanes versus the Islanders, there will be a lot of people out at watch parties, temperatures before the game will be dropping to around 60 then on into the upper fifties, by the time the game is over, cool, beautiful sunny conditions and low humidity. Look at that low humidity. It's in the fifties all the way up through Saturday and Sunday. But then on Monday it starts to climb up to 60 it gets into the sixties. That's when you start to notice it. You know, some days you're like, it feels humid. So we're going to start to feel it. It's not going to be overwhelming, you know, not looking at steamy or tropical conditions, but it will start to creep up as we get into the weekend. Look at the temperature change that we're going to see. You see the blue color contours, that's where temperatures are either below normal or close to normal. And then once we get into Sunday and much of next week, we're going to see temperatures climbing above normal. So we're talking about some eighties. Our normal highs are in the mid seventies and would be pretty close to that through Saturday. Then we start to climb into the eighties and we have the potential on Tuesday to be close to a record. The uh high temperature 88 the record nine back in 1906. So getting close to record territory. By the, uh, beginning of next week, it stays mainly dry. The only real chance of any rain we have is a tiny chance on Tuesday. Just a 20% chance. So we have a very dry period in our seven day forecast.

Seen some activity just in the past 10 minutes or so. I want to take you outside Sky five right now for a live look at the scene. We saw a van being escorted to the runway there and someone got out and now there appears to be a really careful inspection of the debris going on. So we're working to confirm if that may be the NTSB investigation team arriving at the scene. Let's zoom out and give you some about where this is. There are two main runways at RDU International and this is in the grassy field next to the runway that mostly serves terminal one on the east side of the airport, that runway remains closed while this investigation continues at the top of your screen. That is the other main runway that serves terminal two, mostly that runway is open. So we have two things going on here that could affect your flights for the rest of the day and maybe even into tomorrow, the airport takeoff and landing capacity is roughly reduced by half because they are only working with one runway. And if you have a flight coming out of terminal one, maybe Southwest, you're going to have to take that crossover all the way out to that other runway. It's going to add a lot of extra time.

A UNC Health physician and pilot were taken to the hospital Wednesday after a small plane crashed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).


Sky 5 flies over plane crash at RDU

RDU Airport Authority gives an update on a plane crash that sent a physician and pilot to the hospital. The crash occurred Wednesday morning on a flight that took off from Wilmington.

Landguth first, I want to extend my thoughts to those affected by this morning's aircraft accident and thank our first responders for their quick action to respond. The airport authority and its mutual aid partners responded to an aircraft accident at RDU involving a general aviation aircraft. The accident occurred at approximately 10:10 a.m. in the grass next to runway five, right 23 left. The flight was arriving from Wilmington, North Carolina. The A the aircraft is owned by medical Air Inc and operated by UN C air operations. The aircraft had two people on board, one pilot and one passenger. Both were transported to area hospitals. The federal A Bush administration issued a ground stop that was lifted at approximately 1130 this morning. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have both been notified. The National Transportation Safety Board is en route and expected to arrive within the next hour at which time we will conduct an accident investigation. Rdu's runway five left 23 right reopened to departing and arriving aircraft around 11:30 a.m. this morning. Are you experiencing approximately 70 delays and several arriving flights were diverted to other airports? Until ground stock was lifted, travelers should contact their airline for the latest updates regarding the flight status. And of course questions about the identity and condition of the pilot and passenger should be directed to UN C health. And at this time I'll try to answer any questions. You may have, uh, the one, any other accidents in, in the past. I'm not familiar with any other accidents have occurred with that operation. I don't know, uh, that's the role of the National Transportation Safety Board. They'll actually come in and do the investigation. Uh, and at some point in the future, they write up a report and determine what the cause of the accident was. You know, that there was no notification to the airport authority or to the FAA uh about any type of emergency on board. Do we have a guy? We don't, all we know that we've got them out of the airplane and we've got them transported to local hospitals. We know situations like this and delays have a ripple effect on, you know, flights. Do you have any idea what type of impact we'll see here in our view and for not sure, but what we're going to encourage everybody to do is reach out to your airlines. We'll be able to give you real time information about the impact of your particular flight. Ok. I believe some of them went to Greensboro and I think a couple went to Charlotte as well. What, what to be impacted due to the NTSD. Say that one more time at this point in time, what we call the west side of our airport is now open the investigation they'll conduct will all be on the east side. So at this point, we are anticipating normal operations returning to normal operations from this point forward. I don't think that anything that they're doing regarding the investigation or where they would have to investigate would have any impact to the west side of the airport. No, the aircraft is still on the airfield itself. It's on the east side of the field. So terminal one that runways the east side of the field, that's where the debris field actually sits, the west side of the field is open and operational and safe to operate. Not that I'm aware of in operations for you throughout this event today. What was your main concern concerning the passengers that were in the internals? Right. I think our primary focus when, when that accident occurred were the two people sitting in that aircraft? Our primary mission is to make sure we can get to them and try to rescue them and try to make sure that we can get them in a safe condition as fast as we possibly can. Uh secondarily is trying to figure out then how we recover and get our operations back up and running. Mhm. How does that affect? What goes on term? Yeah, so great. Question. So the team has figured out a way to get all the aircraft they're gonna operate at terminal one. Your Southwest develops. Uh We've got a crossover taxi way that we can actually get them through our general aviation aircraft. We've got a crossover taxiway, we can get them to. But the rest of the uh accident scene is actually kind of isolated and closed and locked off. Yeah, you're terminal one at this point in time. Once they can get back on their schedule, it's going to be a normal operations. All right. Thank you guys. All right. Thank you. Grab your phone, right.
