Public records often drive WRAL Investigations. That’s the case with this story. After we learned of an investigative audit at a local public school system, WRAL Investigates sought out the same documents that auditors were poring over.

Our request turned up hundreds of credit card receipts covering three years of administrative spending. We found a virtual treasure trove of technology…computers, tablets, smart phones, accessories, and even a smart watch. The purchases didn’t go through the typical IT vendor protocol. They weren’t for classroom use.

We also found a superintendent who preferred convertible sports cars when he rented for school related travel. All this was paid for by taxpayers. Was the shopping spree justified? The former superintendent makes his case. Taxpayers can decide for themselves Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on WRAL.
