RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina has great public playgrounds and parks. It’s one of the draws of living where we do. That’s why WRAL Investigates was surprised to learn that there is no statewide standard for playground inspections and safety.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has guidelines for playground construction and maintenance, but there’s nothing that requires ongoing checks. We found a wide range of inspection protocol, depending on the city or school system.

As one inspector told us, don’t assume your favorite playground is safe. Whether it’s your school, church or neighborhood, parents must be their own family’s safety inspector. We'll show you what you can do as a parent.

Watch Monday at 5:30 p.m. as WRAL Investigates playground safety inspections.
