SPRING LAKE, N.C. — The Harnett County Sheriff's Office was familiar with the troubled marriage of Jeffrey and Blanca Lacortiglia. Investigators told WRAL News they had been called to the home on Swain Street in Spring Lake several times to investigate claims of domestic violence. But none of those calls ever resulted in an arrest.

Now the husband is under arrest in another state and the wife found dead in their master bedroom.

Jeffrey Lacortiglia surrendered to authorities in Ohio over the weekend. Hamilton Township police there say he showed up on Sunday claiming to have shot and killed his wife.

They called Harnett County, and investigators found Blanca Lacortiglia with a weapon nearby. They also found a note that read: "I'm sorry, I love you."

The Harnett County neighbors were shocked to hear the news.

"You never expect something like this to happen. You don't know what triggers it," Dennis Randolph said.

Neighbors are still trying to wrap their minds around the fact that something like this could happen so close to home.

Randolph, who is retired, said he hears vehicles start up in the morning, the signal, to him at least that this is a a working class neighborhood.

Jeffrey Lacortiglia is being held at the Warren County jail in Ohio.

The couple's 8-year-old son is staying with relatives in Ohio as well.
