FOUR OAKS, N.C. — A Johnston County man says thousands of honeybees were stolen from his property nearly two weeks ago.

The Four Oaks Navy veteran, who did not want to give WRAL News his name, is on disability and milks what he can from the bees.

His bees help pollinate produce that people in the area can buy at the local grocery store or farmer's market. They also produce honey that can sell for nearly $16 per pound.

As a member of the Johnston County Beekeepers Association, he says the county buzzes with about 600 beekeepers, and this is the first beehive heist he's ever heard of.

Capt. Jeff Caldwell of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said he's not aware of any other bee thefts locally.

"If you're going to be stupid enough to do this, fine. Go somewhere else, just don't mess with my bees," the man said.

Caldwell said officers are investigating.
