Heavy rain and gusty winds blasted central North Carolina on Monday afternoon thanks to a cold front.

The National Weather Service quickly issued and canceled a severe thunderstorm warning for a line of storms moving east at 40 mph and carrying the potential for wind gusts up to 60 mph.

The line of showers will impact the Triangle through about 3:30 p.m., WRAL meteorologist Zach Maloch said, and our eastern counties from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Communities to the east of the Triangle are under a Level 1 risk for severe weather, with gusty winds being the primary threat.

"As of today, we are in the second wettest winter on record for RDU," WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said. "If we get a little more than an inch in the next week at RDU, we might break the previous record set back in 1983-1984."

In the Triangle, conditions will clear after sunset.

While downpours are possible, Monday's rainfall should not add to the current river flooding issues, as minimal runoff is expected.

Temperatures ahead of the system were warm Monday afternoon, reaching the mid-60s in Fayetteville. The storms are the leading edge of a cold front that will see those temperatures dip again close to 40 degrees.

Rain should be completely out of the area by Monday evening. Monday will also be breezy, with gusts up to 30 mph.

The middle of the week brings a welcome warmup, with temperatures in the low 60s beginning Tuesday and mostly clear skies. In Raleigh, Wednesday will be the warmest day of the week, with a high around 66 degrees.

After the beautiful weather, another cold front arrives on Friday along with a chance for rain. Temperatures will fall into the mid to upper 50s.
