RALEIGH, N.C. — A beagle that was rescued after being found in a locked cage on the side of a North Carolina road is getting a new home in Alaska.

One-year-old Rooney was found in December by a Good Samaritan who then contacted Triangle Beagle Rescue.

Rooney was welcomed into the shelter and got some care to treat a minor skin problem.

Not three weeks later, Ron and Nan Schonenbach flew to Raleigh to meet Rooney. They arrived Monday and plan to fly back to Alaska on Saturday.

"We were looking for a small female (beagle), and I started submitted applications," Nan Schonenbach said. "This is beagle No. 4."

According to the Triangle Beagle Rescue, North Carolina has an abundance of beagles, but they are difficult to find in Alaska.

The Schonenbachs live on the beach and plan to take Rooney on a lot of walks and maybe even set up a few playdates.

Safe travels, Rooney!

Triangle Beagle Rescue is currently looking for additional foster families. Anyone interested in fostering a dog is asked to contact the rescue.
