All it took was 18 seconds for a battery fire to start in a garage in California, but it's not the first time a lithium ion battery started a house fire.

First, there's a click and 18 seconds later, sparks fly and a fire starts due to a lithium ion battery. Within minutes. This garage in Garden Grove was burning. I came out when the smoke was coming out from the house. Chase Parsons lives across the street and says, thankfully, his neighbor saw it first. He did what he could with a fire extinguisher kudos to him because he jumped in and tried to help him out. The fire started just before noon. Saturday. The family was home and called 911. But as they evacuated, they could hear the batteries exploding inside. Thankfully, firefighters were able to get there fast and prevent the fire from spreading into the house. It was confined to a battery charger. A lithium ion battery charger. We're not 100% sure whether it was actually the charger or the battery that actually had the problem. But this isn't the first battery fire we've seen lately. This home burned in northern California this summer as did the E bike repair shop in New York City killing two people. We can live with them. We can work with them, but we've got to make sure that we're using them safely. Experts say don't mix and match batteries with off brand chargers and don't put lithium battery chargers on extension cords, plug them directly into the outlet. The consumer product safety commission says it had more than 200 reports of fires or overheating of lithium ion batteries last year alone. It was like a rack of the battery docks like you do for your power tools like leaf blower drills, that kind of stuff. I guess they started charging in the garage. Like anyone would a lesson for us all to double check our own power to make sure it doesn't spark a charge where we don't want it. I know we just kind of like, oh, just let it charge for a couple hours. I'll come back to it and now it's like, oh, now I'm kinda a little more cautious. Like if I leave something charging, I wanna make sure I'm kinda nearby in case something like that happens.
