Barricaded suspect in custody after violent domestic assault

Police said Joseph Michael Woods forced entry into his estranged girlfriends home and held out in the home after she escaped

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Cumberland County man is in custody after barricading himself inside his estranged girlfriends home.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, Joseph Michael Woods, 38, forced entry into his estranged girlfriend's home, where he choked and physically assaulted her and took her phone away. The victim was able to escape and call police.

The victim informed police Woods was still in her residence and was possibly armed with a handgun.

Officers arrived on the scene and attempted to make contact with the Woods, but received no response.

After the Crisis Negotiation Team, Aviation Unit and Emergency Response Team arrived to communicate with Woods, there was still no response.

After no communication for several hours, the department's Aviation Unit utilized their drone to locate Woods in the house. The police's Emergency Response Team entered the home and took Woods into custody without harm.

The victim was taken to the hospital; The severity of her injuries are unknown.

Woods was transported to the Cumberland County Detention Center, where he was charged with felony strangulation, breaking and entering with intent to terrorize, assault on a female and habitual assault.

Woods is being held on no bond for the charges.
