FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A suspect in two Fayetteville armed robberies was caught after he stole a car that sheriff's deputies had left out to be stolen, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said that Ricardo Jovon Pittman, 24, of 246 Laraine St., drove off with the bait car parked on the shoulder of a road. Deputies arrested him near Bragg Boulevard.

Pittman was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and felony possession of a motor vehicle. He was also served with outstanding warrants from Fayetteville police charging with two counts of armed robbery and assault on a law enforcement officer.

He was placed in the Cumberland County jail under a $36,300 bond.

Cumberland County authorities started placing bait cars, which are wrecked cars refurbished with alarms and surveillance cameras, to tempt would-be car thieves two years ago. At that time, the county had the highest per capita rate of car thefts in the state.

Pittman was released from jail in November after serving six months for felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, larceny of motor vehicle and possession with intent to sell, according to state Department of Correction records.
