The Indian rhino only has a population of just over 4,000 left in the world, but last week a Kansas zoo helped one rhino celebrate the arrival of her newest calf.

Last month we introduced you to margin an endangered Indian rhino calf and the first ever natural rhino birth with a mom born from artificial insemination. But as big of a deal as its birth was Tanganyika. Director Matt Fault says Friday was another big day for Mama Monica. Our genes gender reveal party. Monica's going to do the real deal for us. Mom pulls out that big piece of blue paper. Mhm. Probably not supposed to eat the paper. The proud mom looks straight at the small crowd while standing next to margin almost as if she knows exactly what's going on, but not for long. It's time for seconds while Marjan continues to nurse and explore his little indoor home. It won't be long before he learns there's a whole world outside waiting for him. And fault says when that happens, you won't want to miss it. Come out, see him a ton this summer because he is incredibly cute. So get your season pass.

A rare black rhino calf, a critically endangered species, was born in an Australian zoo in February. 

This is a globally significant birth for this critically endangered species. With four cars being born here at Taronga Western Plains Zoo over the last six years. Every birth for this critically endangered species is so important, with fewer than 6000 remaining in the wild. So whilst this is incredible news for Taronga Western Plains Zoo, this is also incredibly important news for the species as a whole. Both Mom and Barb are doing well and will remain behind the scenes for the next two months as the calf develops and the bond strengthens between mom and calf.
