— A woman found dead inside a Tarboro home last week was hanged, but a medical examiner hasn't determined whether she was killed or committed suicide.

The body of Aimee Lynn Pitt, 22, was found on Jan. 19 inside the home she shared with her boyfriend, at 1209 Newsome St. Her father had reported her missing two weeks earlier.

According to search warrants, investigators interviewed her boyfriend, Ben Harrelson, twice after Pitt disappeared.

Harrelson told them that he last saw Pitt on Dec. 30 after the two had a fight. He said that he went to bed that night, but Pitt stayed up, and she wasn't at home when he woke up the next morning.

A witness said he saw Pitt and Harrelson arguing outside the house on Jan. 2.

Investigators searched the couple’s home at least once before discovering Pitt. Police haven't disclosed where she was found in the house.

Harrelson was involved in a single-vehicle wreck in Halifax County on Jan. 8, the day after his second interview with police. Police haven't said whether he remains hospitalized.

Investigators seized several items from the couple’s home, including two handwritten notes, a closet rod and two red stains from the kitchen floor, according to search warrants.
