Raleigh, N.C. — A man who died last month after being run over on Capital Boulevard suffered from mental problems and had amphetamines in his system, according to an autopsy report released Monday.
Richard Christopher Maher, 41, of Knightdale, was found dead on Capital Boulevard near Interstate 440 in the early hours of Nov. 6. Police determined that he had been lying in the roadway when he was hit.
Maher died of multiple blunt-force injuries to his head and body, but a medical examiner said he had no injuries that indicated he had been hit by a vehicle while standing and later run over by a second vehicle.
Amphetamines were found in Maher's blood, which the medical examiner said "would certainly be contributory in the circumstances" of his death.
Maher had been dropped off nearby shortly before he was hit and killed, according to the autopsy. He had mental problems and reportedly hadn't slept for several days, the autopsy report states.
