STAR, N.C. — An autopsy report released Friday indicates that an infant found dead in his car seat suffered injuries to his ribs and legs before his death. Filiberto Isaiah Sanchez was three months old when he died May 24.

According to the autopsy, Filiberto was left in his car seat but not buckled. He was found face down and likely died of positional asphyxiation, the medical examiner concluded.

The autopsy also revealed bruises on the child's face and healing fractures to his ribs and bones in his shins. "The developmental abilities at this age would preclude the baby accidentally causing these injuries to himself," Dr. Deborah L. Radisch wrote.

Police arrested the child's parents, Filiberto Cortes Sanchez and Christina Marie Johnson, on May 29 and charged both with child neglect and abuse. At the time, Star Police Chief Dempsey Owens Jr. said more charges could be filed.
