CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A Harnett County woman killed by her son in May was shot four times, including twice in the face, according to an autopsy report released Tuesday.

Carolyn F. Thompson, 60, and her husband, James Howard Thompson, 67, were found dead in their home, at 12665 N.C. Highway 210 South, north of Spring Lake, on May 22, along with their son Richard William David Thompson, 22.

Richard and James Thompson were in a bedroom, and Carolyn Thompson was in the living room, according to a friend of the Thompson's other son, James.

A gun was in Richard Thompson's hand, the friend said.

Authorities ruled the incident a double murder-suicide.

In addition to being shot twice in the face, Carolyn Thompson was shot twice in the left shoulder, and an injury to her chest could have resulted from a fifth gunshot that didn't penetrate her body, according to the autopsy report.
