SANFORD, N.C. — A Lee County man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after a deputy was dragged by a car during a Friday night traffic stop.

Lester Randolph Williams Jr., 24, was being held Monday in the Lee County Jail under a $200,000 bond.

Authorities say Williams was stopped at a license checkpoint Friday night, and deputies smelled marijuana inside the car.

Lt. David Prevatte of the Lee County Sheriff's Office reached inside the vehicle to turn the engine off, and authorities said Williams tried to drive off. Prevatte was dragged "20 or 30 feet," and the vehicle nearly hit a second deputy, authorities said.

Prevatte was able to force the vehicle off the road, and Williams was arrested, authorities said.
