Authorities investigating after body found in Lumberton field
Officers were investigating Wednesday morning after a body was found in a Lumberton field.
Posted — UpdatedThe body of Avery Scurlock, 23, of Lumber Bridge, was found after Robeson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the 100 block of Old Tower Road on a report of gunfire.
Scurlock was wearing a black do-rag, shorts, false eyelashes, a black bra and red Elmo bedroom slippers.
His mother, Brenda Scurlock, said her son told family members that he was gay two years ago.
He went out Tuesday night after someone took down a Facebook page that had photos and videos of him dressed as a woman, she said.
"He made a connection with a guy that took his page down," Brenda Scurlock said.
She said that some of Avery Scurlock's friends were concerned about him going to meet the person that took the page down.
"I was surprised that he would go meet somebody that took the page down because that’s a red flag right there," she said.
The sheriff's office has not said publicly said if Avery Scurlock knew his killer or if a suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting.
“You will get caught, so you might as turn yourself in,” Brenda Scurlock said. “You killed my son.”
“You might have killed my son, but you didn’t take his spirit from us," she continued.
Authorities also have not publicly identified a motive for the killing but did find Avery Scurlock's car that had been missing.
