CARTHAGE, N.C. — A Moore County man died Sunday of injuries suffered when he hanged himself after being arrested on drug charges last week, authorities said.

Jack William Garner, 33, of Carthage, was arrested March 5 and was taken to the Rick Rhyne Public Safety Building for questioning. While detectives with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office were preparing warrants to charge him with felony drug offenses, Garner hanged himself in an interrogation room, authorities said.

Garner was taken to First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst for treatment, but he died Sunday of complications from the suicide attempt, authorities said.

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields notified the State Bureau of Investigation shortly after the incident occurred, and the SBI is still investigating, authorities said.

Garner's death was the second in-custody death at an area jail in the last week.

Brian Alfred Rogers, 32, of Raleigh, was found dead in a cell at the Franklin County jail on March 7, authorities said. Detention officers were making their rounds in the jail when they found him.

Authorities said there was no sign of foul play or suspicious activity, but the SBI is investigating.
