— A 5-year-old was fatally shot in the crossfire of a planned fight Wednesday evening, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Alva Paisley Oxendine, known as AJ to his friends, was in the backseat of his mother’s car when gunfire erupted.

His brother, also in the backseat, was not injured.

Authorities said AJ was taken to the Red Springs Police Department in a private vehicle.

Video shows his mother kicking the door of the police department and officers trying to rescue him.

He was taken to Southeastern Medical Center, where he died.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said two groups had fought earlier Wednesday and agreed to meet on N.C. Highway 72 West, where the fatal shooting occurred.

No arrests have been made in the case.
