Authorities: Teens led Durham deputy on high-speed chase in stolen car

The chase began shortly before midnight when a Durham County deputy clocked a Honda Accord going 20 mph over the speed limit near the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and Miami Boulevard, authorities said. The driver refused to pull over and sped north on U.S. 70, running a red light at Lynn Road, authorities said.

The chase continued onto southbound Interstate 85 at speeds topping 100 mph "while the driver operated the car in a careless and reckless manner," authorities said. The pursuit proceeded onto Avondale Drive and Roxboro Road before ending on the 3800 block of Shaftsbury Street, where the Accord crashed, authorities said.

Three people jumped out of the car and fled, but deputies apprehended two, including the driver. Authorities are still searching for the third person.

The Accord was stolen in Durham, and authorities found phones, two handguns, ammunition and cash inside.

Both teens were released to family members but will face juvenile charges of felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving without a license, resisting and obstructing a public officer, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a handgun by a minor.
