Watch where you're walking next time you're in downtown Cary โ€“ you might walk right through an invisible statue and not even realize it!

If you see people gathering around to look at something, but you don't see anything there, it might be part of the new augmented reality art project happening around downtown. Once again, the town has hidden secret art pieces around town to surprise and delight โ€“ and give you another reason to get outside.

Some people have seen futuristic robots floating past the Fidelity Bank Plaza. Others have seen a realistic statue of a man on a horse. There's even a hot rod near the old library site that provides a perfect opportunity for interactive poses.

Starting in September, certain sites around downtown have been marked with small signs printed with QR codes as part of the Town of Cary's Augmented Reality Artist Exhibition. There's a special phone app used specifically for viewing the artwork. Download the app on the town's website, find the signs around town, and scan the QR codes for a unique scavenger hunt and art display.

There are nine locations in all, and they are listed on the town website.

The latest in downtown Cary's surprise exhibits and activities

During the past year or so, downtown Cary has launched multiple surprise initiatives to keep people coming to the walkable downtown. Especially during the pandemic, when indoor and group activities have become less common, the town has worked to provide outdoor activities to keep families entertained.

When the NC Chinese Lantern Festival was canceled in December due to COVID, lanterns were brought into downtown Cary for free public viewing.

The town also launched a pop-up art exhibit called GLOW that included surprise art pieces around downtown, such as a 3D virtual reality mural, glowing oversized flowers and a giant metallic tree that changed colors with LED lights.
